'Opal' is a popular and widely used plum variety. This tree grows especially vigorously at a young age and has a bushy, somewhat jagged, semi-open crown that grows 2-4 metres tall. The tree flowers in April with lightly fragrant white flowers. 'Opal' is a self-pollinating variety, but for good fruit production it is recommended to plant another plum tree nearby, such as 'Czar' or 'Victoria'. The plums of 'Opal' are relatively small, ovoid and have a reddish-blue to purplish-red colour. The flesh is yellow-green, juicy, aromatic and pleasantly sweet. These plums are ripe for picking from late July to early August and are suitable for direct consumption or for making purée. 'Opal' is an easy-to-grow variety that usually produces many plums and is very suitable for use in private gardens. The variety was developed in 1946 at the Swedish testing station in Alnarp, from a cross between 'Early Favorite' and 'Reine Claude d'Oullins'. 'Opal' is hardy to zone 6
