Polystichum setiferum "Congestum" is called the soft needle fern in Dutch. It is a beautiful, evergreen dwarf needle fern. It has bi-pinnate, soft, dark green leaves that hang over gracefully. This small and low-growing fern prefers a sheltered position in the semi-shade or shade and a well-drained, humus-rich, nutrient-rich, slightly moist soil. Polystichum setiferum 'Congestum' is hardy, reasonably tolerant of air pollution and, once well established, sufficiently drought-resistant. It has few problems with pests and is also resistant to disease. This fern is suitable for the woodland garden, informal garden, rock garden, gravel garden and can also be used as an underplant for shrubs and trees.
