Physalis Tomatillo

This native Mexican plant produces purple fruits about 5 cm in diameter when ripe. Versatile in the kitchen, they can be cooked, added to ratatouille, or used for making hot sauces.


Cultivation Tips for the Purple Mexican Vegetable

  • Location: sunny, ideally under cover for higher yields

  • Growth requirements similar to tomatoes

  • Germination: 10–20 days

  • Sowing: February to early April under warm conditions (~20°C)

  • Transplanting: after May 15, spacing 60 cm

Care

  • Prune shoots at the end of the season (August) to accelerate fruit set

  • Rich, well-draining soil and regular watering ensure healthy growth

Harvest

  • Period: August to October

  • Ripe when the skin turns brown, cracks, or dries while the fruit remains green

  • Post-harvest: fruits can be stored in their skin for several months in a dry place
