Origanum vulgare - Organic perennial

Origanum vulgare, also called marjoram or mountain pansy, is a semi-evergreen, herbaceous perennial with a bushy, carpet-like habit. The leaves are broad, ovate, slightly hairy and dark green in colour. Marjoram flowers from July to August, with purplish pink to pinkish white flowers in branched clusters. Origanum vulgare prefers a position in full sun and a well-drained, preferably calcareous soil. Once established, the plant is drought-tolerant. Marjoram is hardy, tolerant to sea winds and air pollution and has good disease resistance. The leaves are used in meat and vegetable dishes, but also medicinally, as an antiseptic and externally against muscle pain, arthritis, asthma,... An infusion of marjoram in bath water has a relaxing effect.
