Imperata cylindrica red baron or Japanese bloodgrass - an eye-catcher in any garden!


Imperata cylindrica ''red baron'', syn. ''rubra'', called Japanese bloodgrass in Dutch, is a decorative deciduous grass species with a stiff upright growth and loose clump forming habit. The narrow linear leaves are fresh green and then turn fiery red in summer, flowering rarely occurs in europe. In other regions, Japanese bloodgrass flowers from July to August with silver-grey flower spikes. Imperata cylindrica ''red baron'' likes a sunny and sheltered position in well-drained soil. This grass is drought-tolerant, reasonably hardy, tolerates sea wind and air pollution and is a special accent plant for use in the border.
