Ilex aquifolium is a particularly decorative but very prickly holly. This medium-sized shrub or small tree is dioecious, evergreen and naturally has a narrow, compact upright habit. It flowers inconspicuously around May with ivory-white flowers that have an attractive scent and are followed in autumn by orange-red berries on the female plants. Ilex aquifolium is dioecious, which means that there are male and female plants. The female plants will produce berries if there is a good male pollinator in the vicinity. The common holly is very decorative in winter, attracts bees, butterflies and numerous birds, is very flexible with regard to location, fairly tolerant of drought, can withstand air pollution and tolerates sea wind.
