Cornus mas or the yellow dogwood is a small to medium-sized tree or shrub native to large parts of central and southern Europe and western Asia. It flowers early in spring with a sea of yellow flowers on the bare wood, after which small cherry-like fruits develop (hence the name 'cornelian cherry') that turn a beautiful red and are edible. Unlike its congeners, this Cornus mas also feels well in calcareous soil, even in wet clay. In autumn the leaves turn a beautiful shade of orange-red to red-purple.

The yellow dogwood is an indigenous hedge plant that grows into a sturdy shrub (or tree). It grows a little wider, making it very suitable for landscape hedges and hedgerows. Cornus mas shows a beautiful autumnal colour and flowers abundantly in early spring from February to April! The yellow dogwood is flexible in terms of location and is also hardy! The fruits can even be used to make delicious jam. This hedge needs little pruning if it is allowed enough space. If this dogwood is allowed to occupy less space, then more frequent pruning is important.

Interestingly, the yellow dogwood is insensitive to diseases and pests! Moreover, this hedge plant can be planted in both wet and dry soils. An enormously strong, easy to maintain and beautiful eye-catcher in every garden or food forest!
