Chinese chives - Allium Tuberosum - Organic perennial

Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum) are plants of the garlic family (Alliaceae). The species is related to bulbous plants such as onion, leek and garlic. The leaves of Chinese chives are coarser and broader than those of Allium schoenoprasum. The plant has a slight garlic-like flavour.

When preparing food, chives are generally used for their thin young stems. Thicker stems tend to become tough. Chinese chives are mainly used in Asian cuisine where the flowers are also eaten in dishes. These are then put through a baking batter, deep fried and served with a sauce. Chinese chives are used in most dishes as a seasoning and stimulate the appetite and digestion. In Chinese cuisine, it is also used for its diuretic effect.
