Blue pumpkin from Hungary

The Blue Hungarian Pumpkin is a very sprawling and late variety with round, flattened fruits of blue-grey color, weighing 4 to 8 kg.

Cultivation Advice

Sowing

• Indoors in pots at 20°C, March – April (speeds fruit set and reduces pest damage)

• Transplant outdoors after the last frost (±May 15)

• Plant spacing: 1 m; up to 2 m for sprawling varieties

• Plant holes: small pits filled with compost

• Direct sowing: possible in May, later harvest, lower yield

Growth and Care

• Location: sunny

• Soil: rich in organic matter

• Watering: regular and abundant at the roots during dry periods

• Pruning: optional, not necessary

Harvest

• Harvest at end of season when leaves wilt and stem dries

• For better storage, harvest as late as possible but before the first frost

• After harvest, leave outdoors in sun for one day (protected from rain and frost), then store in a dry, well-ventilated place

Tips & Tricks

• Seeds require warmth (20–22°C) for quick germination

• Avoid excessive moisture to prevent seed rot

• Fruitless plants can result from:

  • Lack of pollination (attract insects with flowers)

  • Too few female flowers (often due to extreme heat)

• Protect plants in very hot weather: mulch, provide shade
