Product description

The annual field margin mixture 'M1' contains seeds from six different crops. This makes it beneficial for the biodiversity of the field margins. However, this mixture also has another important function: it has been specially formulated to combat the bean fly. Field trials and literature have shown that a flowering field margin including buckwheat can attract the parasitic wasp Trybliographa rapae. The parasitic wasp parasitises the larvae of the bean fly, causing them to die and reducing damage to germinating beans.

Buckwheat is the main constituent of field margin mix 'M1'. The additional species (phacelia, borage, marigold, cornflower and cosmos) follow buckwheat in flowering and attract parasitic wasps throughout the bean growing season. Naturally, these plants are also an extremely important food source for pollinating insects such as bees and bumblebees.

Sowing: Mid April to end of May, in order to have a flowering strip of buckwheat in the field margin around the time of sowing the beans. Sowing this mixture before mid-May brings the risk of night frost damage.

Soil: A flower mixture cannot be sown through an already overgrown border or an existing grass vegetation. This leads to poor emergence as grass and weeds are very competitive.
