This historic Roman lettuce dates back to the 19th century and forms large, long, and voluminous heads. The outer leaves are deep red-brown, while the inner leaves remain green. It is a winter-hardy and productive variety, resistant to cold and premature bolting. Ideal for early spring or late winter harvest.

Sowing

• Period: August 15 to the end of September under cover or in open ground

• Direct sowing: 2–3 seeds per plant, 30 cm apart

• In a nursery: in pots or compressed clumps, transplant after ~3 weeks at 30 × 30 cm

Tip: With successive sowings every 3 weeks from February to September, you can harvest fresh lettuce almost year-round.

Soil & Care

• Soil: well-decomposed compost, cool soil

• Water: regular watering during dry periods

• Mulching: helps prevent evaporation and keeps the soil moist
