Onion Red Baron

This early red onion variety produces round, slightly flattened bulbs with an attractive red color. It is known for its excellent flavor and outstanding storage capacity.

It can also be sown in May–June to produce young sets for transplanting the following spring.

Sowing Red Onions

• Direct sow from March–April

• Row spacing: 25 cm

• Cover seeds lightly (about 1 cm)

• Thin after approximately 2.5 months to 8 cm

• Thin again a few weeks later to 10 cm

Green shoots are edible and delicious in salads.

Care

• Loose, well-draining fertile soil

• Sunny location

• Regular weeding early in the season

• Moderate watering initially, later only during prolonged drought

Diseases and Prevention

Onions are susceptible to powdery mildew.

Preventive measures:

• Apply well-rotted compost

• Spray regularly with horsetail extract

• Avoid waterlogged soil

• Ensure good soil aeration

Harvest and Storage

• Harvest from late July to September

• Bend stems in August to promote bulb ripening

• Allow onions to dry for 48 hours on the ground in dry weather

• Store in a dry, well-ventilated place, optionally hanging

Properly stored onions keep for several months.
