Summer Butterhead Lettuce Blonde van Laeken is an old Belgian variety with a voluminous head, very pale green leaves, and a soft texture. It is an excellent alternative to the summer variety “Grosse Blonde Paresseuse” and perfect for a fresh summer harvest.

Growing tips for Blonde van Laeken lettuce

Sowing

• Under glass: from April

• In open ground: after the last frost until June

• In nursery trays: sow and transplant after 4 weeks at 30 cm spacing, when plants have 4–5 leaves

• Direct sowing: thin to 10 cm, later to 30 cm

Lettuce grows best in sunny locations, on fresh, humus-rich soil, with regular watering during dry spells.
Sow from February to June every 3 weeks for a continuous summer harvest.

Care and disease prevention

• Keep soil moist

• Water regularly during dry periods

• Protect from slugs

Harvesting

• Harvest 8–10 weeks after sowing

• Cut the head at the root, level with the soil

• Can be stored for several days in the refrigerator
