Euphorbia characias Wulfenii

Euphorbia characias ‘Wulfenii’ is an impressive evergreen perennial belonging to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). This cultivar is valued for its strong architectural form and striking spring display. Native to the Mediterranean region, it thrives in warm, sunny, and dry conditions.

Growth and Foliage

The plant produces upright, sturdy stems densely covered with narrow, lance-shaped leaves in grey-green to blue-green tones. The foliage remains attractive throughout the year, providing structure even in winter. It typically reaches 80–120 cm in height and 60–100 cm in spread.

Flowering

From April to June, large dome-shaped flower heads appear with bright lime-green bracts and dark purple nectar glands at their centers. The long-lasting blooms attract bees and pollinators.

Position and Soil

Prefers:

• Full sun to light shade

• Well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil

• Dry to moderately dry conditions

Good drainage is essential, especially in winter.

Care

After flowering, cut back the spent stems to the base. Wear gloves when pruning, as the milky sap may cause skin irritation.

Hardy to approximately -10°C to -15°C in well-drained soil.
