Product description

Eggplant Listada de Gandia

Eggplants are heat-loving vegetables that require care from sowing to harvest. With proper maintenance, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of firm, glossy fruits.

Sowing

Eggplant seeds need warmth to germinate. Sow them from February to March in a warm location at a constant temperature of 23–24°C. Keep the soil moist, lightly misted, and provide plenty of light.

Some eggplant varieties require more warmth than others to germinate. Increase the temperature above 25°C if seeds are slow to sprout.

Transplant seedlings into pots once they have 3–4 true leaves, still in a warm environment. After the last frost, plant them outdoors or under glass at a spacing of 50 cm. In northern regions, such as the Loire, growing eggplants under glass is ideal.

Care

Eggplants thrive in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Add compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility.

  • Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering.

  • Prune side shoots and remove lower leaves to promote fruit development and better sunlight exposure.

Harvesting

Eggplants are ready to harvest when they reach full size and have firm, glossy skin. Cut the fruits with a sharp knife, leaving part of the stem attached.

Regular harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing fruits throughout the season. Avoid leaving eggplants on the plant too long, as they can become overripe and bitter.

Diseases and Prevention

Eggplants can be susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew, root rot, and wilt.

Tips for prevention:

  • Practice crop rotation to maintain healthy, balanced soil.

  • Avoid wetting leaves when watering.

  • Space plants adequately for good air circulation.

  • Spray regularly with nettle or fern decoction to boost plant resistance. Seaweed powder can also be applied as a preventive measure.

Following these tips will help you grow healthy, delicious eggplants with a plentiful harvest.
