Winter vetch (Vicia villosa), also known as hairy vetch, is an annual legume commonly used as a cover crop, especially in temperate regions. It can fix atmospheric nitrogen and contributes significant organic matter, enriching the soil with essential nutrients for subsequent crops. Its root system improves soil structure, making it looser and more aerated.

The dense foliage helps prevent soil erosion, suppress weeds, and provides a habitat for beneficial organisms, including certain insects. Its flowers produce nectar and attract many pollinators.

Cultivation Tips

Sowing:

• Sow on bare soil from August to October

• Lightly cover with soil and press or firm the soil

• Keep the soil moist for optimal germination

• Suitable for all soil types

• Can be sown with cereal crops for support

• Once established, winter vetch is relatively drought-tolerant

Maintenance and Cutting:

• Tolerates low temperatures and continues growing during mild winters

• In spring, before or at the beginning of flowering, mow or chop and lightly incorporate into the soil to release nitrogen and nutrients

• To prevent self-seeding, incorporate vetch within 2 weeks after flowering
