Product description

White Clover – a Versatile Perennial Green Manure and Ground Cover

White clover (Trifolium repens) is a hardy, fast-growing perennial legume that plays a valuable role in organic gardening. This low-growing clover variety forms a dense, weed-suppressing carpet while naturally enriching the soil.

Why Choose White Clover?

  • Nitrogen fixation: White clover forms a symbiotic relationship with root bacteria to capture atmospheric nitrogen, naturally fertilizing the soil.

  • Excellent ground cover: It forms a dense mat that effectively blocks out weeds and protects the soil from drying and erosion.

  • Improves soil structure: Its branched root system stabilizes the ground and enhances soil texture.

  • Adds organic matter: After mowing, the plant material can be left on the ground or incorporated into the soil to produce rich humus.

  • Pollinator-friendly: Its long-lasting white blooms are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

Ideal Between Garden Beds

This low-growing variety tolerates foot traffic and is perfect for pathways between cultivated beds. Let it grow for one year or longer. Once worked into the soil, the former path becomes a fertile bed with improved structure, humus, and nitrogen levels.

Growing Advice for White Clover

Sowing:
Broadcast in spring or autumn onto warmed, weed-free soil. Lightly cover the seeds with soil, firm down, and water to encourage germination. Hardy and easy to grow.

Soil & Care:
White clover thrives in most soil types and requires little maintenance. No fertiliser needed; just water during dry spells.

Mowing & Incorporation:
Each seasonal cycle lasts about 3 months. Mow after flowering but before seed formation:

  • Autumn sowing: mow in late spring

  • Spring sowing: mow in late summer

Wait a few weeks, then incorporate the plant residue into the soil, where it will decompose and increase humus content.

Recommended sowing rate:
100g per 100 m² (1 are)
