Summer Vetch

Common or summer vetch (Vicia sativa) is an annual legume commonly used as a cover crop. It can fix atmospheric nitrogen and enrich the soil with organic matter, essential for the growth of subsequent crops. The root system improves soil structure, making it looser and more aerated. Its rapid growth and dense foliage help suppress weeds.

Summer vetch also provides a habitat for beneficial organisms and its flowers attract pollinators, such as bees, for nectar and pollen.

Cultivation Tips

Sowing:

• Sow broadly on bare soil from March to late August

• Cover lightly with soil and press or roll

• Keep soil moist for good germination

• Suitable for all soil types, can be sown with cereal crops for support

• Once established, vetch is relatively drought-tolerant

Maintenance and Cutting:

• Cut or mow in summer (June–August) before or just after flowering

• Incorporate residues lightly into the soil to release nitrogen and nutrients

• To prevent unwanted self-seeding, incorporate vetch within 2 weeks after flowering

Note: Summer vetch is sensitive to frost; late-summer sowings may be killed by moderate frost. For winter ground cover, consider winter vetch instead.
