Product description

Rosmarinus officinalis 'Abraxas' – Rosemary

Rosmarinus officinalis 'Abraxas' is a compact, bushy-growing rosemary with wonderfully aromatic, evergreen foliage. This Mediterranean plant is both an attractive garden plant and a versatile culinary herb.

With its compact habit, 'Abraxas' grows to approximately 40–50 cm tall, making it particularly suitable for herb gardens, Mediterranean borders, rock gardens and containers on patios or balconies.

🌿 Aromatic culinary herb

Rosemary is one of the best-known Mediterranean herbs. Its fragrant leaves are excellent with potatoes, grilled vegetables, meat, fish, sauces and stews. It is also ideal for marinades, herb oils and Mediterranean dishes.

Young shoots can be harvested regularly throughout the growing season. Regular harvesting also helps keep the plant compact and well branched.

🌱 Evergreen and decorative

One of the main advantages of Rosmarinus officinalis 'Abraxas' is its evergreen foliage. The narrow leaves range from green to grey-green and give the plant its characteristic Mediterranean appearance.

Its compact form makes it particularly suitable for smaller gardens and containers. It combines beautifully with lavender, thyme, sage and ornamental grasses.

💙 Flowers for bees

Small light blue to violet flowers appear in spring. In favourable conditions, flowering can start relatively early in the year.

The nectar-rich flowers are visited by bees, bumblebees and other pollinating insects, making rosemary a useful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.

☀️ Position and soil

Plant Rosmarinus officinalis 'Abraxas' in a warm, sunny and sheltered position. A spot against a south-facing wall is ideal.

Rosemary prefers a well-drained, rather dry soil and tolerates lime-rich conditions. Good drainage is particularly important during winter.

💧 Low water requirements

Once established, rosemary is drought tolerant. It is better to water thoroughly from time to time than to give small amounts of water frequently.

Container-grown plants need particularly good drainage.

✂️ Pruning and harvesting

Young shoots can be harvested regularly during the growing season. This also helps maintain a compact and bushy shape.

Light pruning can be carried out after flowering. Avoid cutting deeply into old, bare wood, as rosemary does not readily regenerate from old wood.

❄️ Winter hardiness

Although rosemary originates from the Mediterranean region, it can overwinter successfully in our climate when planted in a sheltered, well-drained position.

The combination of frost and wet soil is particularly damaging. Protect the plant during severe frost.

Container-grown plants can be moved to a cool, sheltered and frost-free location during prolonged periods of freezing weather.
