Product description

Quercus coccifera (Kermes oak)

Quercus coccifera, commonly known as the kermes oak, is an evergreen oak native to the Mediterranean region. This hardy species is renowned for its exceptional drought tolerance and its ability to thrive on poor, rocky soils. It is therefore an excellent choice for natural gardens, climate-resilient plantings and Mediterranean-style landscapes.

Growth habit

The kermes oak usually grows as a dense shrub or a low, multi-stemmed tree. Growth is slow to moderate, but extremely durable. Over time, it develops a compact, irregular structure that requires little maintenance and is highly resistant to wind and heat.

Foliage and appearance

The leaves are dark green, leathery and glossy, often with spiny margins. Thanks to its evergreen foliage, Quercus coccifera provides year-round structure and shelter in the garden.

Position and soil

This oak prefers a sunny position and well-drained, rather dry soils. Calcareous soils are well tolerated, but the plant also performs well on nutrient-poor ground. Once established, additional watering is rarely necessary.

Ecological value

Quercus coccifera has high ecological value. It offers shelter and nesting opportunities for birds and insects, while its acorns provide food for various animal species. Historically, this oak was also used for the production of crimson dye from the kermes insect, from which it derives its name.

Garden use

Ideal as:

  • a solitary shrub or small tree

  • part of a natural or Mediterranean planting

  • a drought- and wind-resistant hedge

  • a structural plant in climate-adaptive gardens

Maintenance

This oak requires very little maintenance. Pruning is rarely needed and is limited to removing dead or unwanted branches. Thanks to its tough nature, it is highly resistant to diseases and pests.
