Product description

Prunus × yedoensis (Multi-stemmed Yoshino cherry)

Prunus × yedoensis, commonly known as the Yoshino cherry, is one of the most admired ornamental cherry trees worldwide. In its multi-stemmed form, this tree truly comes into its own, offering an airy, elegant structure with a natural appearance. Especially in spring, it becomes a real eye-catcher thanks to its abundant blossom.

Flowering

In March–April, the tree is covered with masses of pale pink to almost white flowers, appearing just before or together with the leaves. The blossoms have a subtle fragrance and attract bees and other early pollinators. In a multi-stemmed form, the flowering appears particularly rich and layered.

Growth and habit

As a multi-stemmed tree, Prunus × yedoensis develops a broad, vase-shaped crown with gracefully arching branches. The multiple trunks give the tree a natural, park-like character. Its mature height generally ranges between 5 and 8 metres, depending on site conditions and pruning.

Foliage and autumn colour

The foliage is fresh green and oval in shape. In autumn, it turns yellow to orange, providing a second seasonal highlight after the spring bloom.

Position and soil

This ornamental cherry prefers a sunny to lightly shaded position. A fertile, well-drained soil is ideal. The tree does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging but otherwise adapts well to most garden soils.

Garden use

The multi-stemmed Prunus × yedoensis is ideal as:

  • a solitary feature tree in gardens or parks

  • an accent tree in larger gardens

  • a decorative tree along driveways or paths

  • a key element in Japanese-style or natural gardens

Maintenance

Maintenance is minimal. If pruning is necessary, it should be done immediately after flowering to maintain the natural shape and reduce the risk of disease. Overall, this is a strong and reliable tree.
