The Mechelen runner bean is a Belgian variety, known for its early harvest and high productivity. The pods are medium-long, slightly flattened, with fine flesh, and completely stringless, making them perfect for fresh consumption.

Growing tips for Mechelen runner bean

Sowing

Sow directly in open ground from May onwards, after the last frost, in warm and slightly moist soil.
Sowing methods:

• In rows: one seed every 10 cm

• In groups: 5–6 seeds per hole, every 50 cm

Preferably sow in double rows with 60–70 cm spacing.

The plant prefers light, humus-rich soil and a sunny location. In poor or dry soil, pods may become tough and fibrous.

Sow every three weeks until mid-June for a staggered harvest into autumn.

Maintenance and diseases

• Provide sturdy support such as a trellis, tipi, or wire mesh about 2 m high

• Hill up plants three weeks after emergence for stability

• Water regularly during dry periods

Harvest

Harvest 2.5–3 months after sowing, every 4–5 days for tender pods.

Tips

• Soak seeds for 12–24 hours before sowing to improve germination

• As a preventive measure, freeze seeds for one week if pests are detected or not all seeds are used in the same year
