The Vieille France Melon is an old French heirloom variety known for its easy cultivation and exceptional flavor. It requires minimal pruning and produces juicy, aromatic fruits with a relatively short growing cycle, making it ideal for regions north of the Loire.

Sowing Vieille France Melon

Although suitable for northern regions, melons require warmth. Greenhouse or polytunnel cultivation is highly recommended.

Sowing:

• In cooler climates: sow in pots from March to June (2–3 seeds per pot)

• Optimal germination temperature: approx. 25°C

• Transplant in May–June in greenhouse or under cover

• Spacing: 1 meter between plants

Pinch plants back to 3–4 leaves, and repeat on side shoots.

In southern regions, direct sowing outdoors is possible.

Growing Conditions

• At least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily

• Warm, sheltered location

• Soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure

Water deeply once or twice per week. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal diseases.

Maintenance and Diseases

• Pinch back main stem and side shoots

• Thin flowers to encourage larger fruits

• Ensure good air circulation

Susceptible to powdery mildew, fusarium, cladosporium and anthracnose.

Use natural fertilizers to strengthen plant resistance.

Harvest

Melons mature approximately 70–100 days after sowing.
