Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Palo Alto’ is a selected sweetgum variety known for its more compact, uniform growth and its exceptionally intense autumn colour. In its multi-stemmed form, this tree develops a natural, park-like appearance and provides ornamental value throughout the seasons.

Growth and habit

As a multi-stemmed tree, ‘Palo Alto’ forms a balanced, slightly upright crown supported by several strong trunks. Growth is moderate and controlled, making this cultivar suitable for gardens where the typical species might grow too large. Mature height usually reaches 8 to 12 metres, depending on site conditions.

Foliage and autumn colour

The deeply lobed, star-shaped leaves are fresh green during summer. In autumn, they transform into spectacular shades of yellow, orange, red and deep purple, often very intense and reliable, even after cooler summers. This makes ‘Palo Alto’ an outstanding autumn tree.

Bark and winter interest
