Knautia Macedonica

Knautia macedonica – Macedonian scabious

Knautia macedonica, also known as Macedonian scabious, is an airy, long-flowering perennial that is perfect for a natural and biodiverse garden. Its elegant, dark red to wine-red flower heads appear on long, slender stems, creating a light and playful effect above the border. Its open growth habit gives the garden a natural and informal character.

Flowering usually starts in June and can continue until September, especially when faded flowers are regularly removed. The flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, making Knautia macedonica a valuable plant for an insect-friendly garden.

Macedonian scabious prefers a sunny position in well-drained, humus-rich to ordinary garden soil. Once established, it also tolerates relatively dry conditions. Its loose structure combines beautifully with ornamental grasses and other perennials in naturalistic, flower-rich borders.

After flowering, the faded flower heads develop into decorative seed heads. These can be left standing to provide additional structure in the winter garden and may also encourage natural self-seeding.
