Product description

Hibiscus syriacus (Multi-stemmed Rose of Sharon)

Hibiscus syriacus, commonly known as the Rose of Sharon, is a striking summer-flowering shrub that is very suitable for training as a multi-stemmed tree. In this form, it develops an elegant, open structure and becomes a real focal point in the garden, especially in late summer when many other plants have finished flowering.

Flowering

From July to September, Hibiscus syriacus produces large, trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink, purple and blue, often with a contrasting centre. The flowers are rich in nectar and attract bees and other pollinators. As a multi-stemmed tree, the blooms are beautifully distributed throughout the crown.

Growth and habit

In its multi-stemmed form, the Rose of Sharon develops an upright, airy crown with several slender trunks. Growth is moderate and controlled. The mature height usually ranges between 3 and 5 metres, depending on site conditions and pruning. Its natural habit fits both modern and more natural garden designs.

Foliage and seasonal interest

The foliage is fresh green and three-lobed, emerging relatively late in spring. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow before falling. During winter, the multi-stemmed structure remains clearly visible.

Position and soil

Hibiscus syriacus prefers a sunny, warm position, sheltered from cold winds. A fertile, well-drained soil is ideal. Once established, the plant is reasonably drought-tolerant.

Garden use

Ideal as:

  • a solitary accent tree

  • a flowering feature in smaller gardens

  • a structural element in modern or classic designs

  • a summer-flowering addition to biodiversity-friendly gardens

Maintenance

Maintenance is easy. Pruning can be done in early spring to maintain shape and encourage flowering, as blooms are produced on new wood. Overall, this is a strong and reliable garden plant.
