Product description

Ficus carica – Multi-stemmed Fig Tree

Ficus carica, commonly known as the common fig, is a characterful Mediterranean eye-catcher in the garden. In its multi-stemmed form, this plant takes on a natural, almost sculptural appearance. Several stems grow upward from the base, creating an open and airy crown that looks both playful and elegant.

Appearance and Growth Habit

The multi-stemmed fig has large, deeply lobed, hand-shaped leaves. Its fresh green foliage provides a lush, exotic look in spring and summer. In autumn, the leaves turn soft yellow before falling. The twisted, light grey stems create a decorative silhouette even in winter.

Depending on location and pruning, a multi-stemmed fig can grow to approximately 3 to 5 metres in height and width. Thanks to its open structure, it is highly suitable as a solitary focal point in a sunny garden.

Fruit

Besides its ornamental value, Ficus carica is well known for its sweet, aromatic fruits. The pear-shaped figs ripen in late summer and sometimes again in autumn, depending on the variety and climate. They are delicious eaten fresh or used in salads, desserts and jams.

Location and Care

The fig prefers a warm, sunny and sheltered position. The more sun it receives, the better the fruit production. A well-drained, fertile soil is essential, as the plant does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

Although reasonably hardy (down to approximately -10 to -12 °C / 14–10 °F), protection during severe frost is recommended, especially for young plants. A layer of mulch around the base helps protect the roots.

Pruning

Pruning is not strictly necessary but can help maintain an open and compact shape. This is best done in early spring or directly after harvest. With a multi-stemmed fig, the focus is on preserving its natural form and removing dead or crossing branches.

Garden Use

The multi-stemmed fig fits perfectly in a Mediterranean-style garden but also combines beautifully with modern or country garden designs. Thanks to its architectural shape, it works well as a solitary specimen in the lawn, near a terrace or in a spacious border. It also thrives in a large container on a sunny patio.

With its combination of ornamental value, edible fruit and Mediterranean charm, the multi-stemmed Ficus carica is a versatile and atmospheric addition to any garden.
