Euonymus planipes (Multi-stemmed spindle tree)

Euonymus planipes is a highly ornamental spindle tree, especially valued for its brilliant autumn colour and decorative fruits. Trained as a multi-stemmed tree, it develops an elegant, open structure and provides interest from summer well into autumn.

Growth and habit

In multi-stemmed form, Euonymus planipes grows as a large shrub or small tree with several upright trunks. Growth is slow and balanced. Mature height usually reaches 4 to 6 metres, giving the plant a light and refined appearance.

Foliage and autumn colour

The foliage is oval and fresh green in summer. In autumn, it turns deep red to purple, often exceptionally vivid and reliable, making this species one of the finest autumn-colouring shrubs or small trees.

Fruits

After flowering, pink to red fruit capsules develop, opening to reveal bright orange seeds. These fruits persist for a long time, adding ornamental value and providing food for birds.

Position and soil

Euonymus planipes prefers a sunny to partially shaded position. It adapts well to most garden soils, provided they are well drained, including light clay and humus-rich soils.

Garden use

Ideal as:

Maintenance
