Product description

Cornus officinalis (Japanese cornelian cherry)

Cornus officinalis is a distinctive, early-flowering dogwood native to East Asia. It is valued for its very early bloom, graceful habit and ornamental fruits. This species provides interest throughout several seasons and is particularly well suited to natural and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Flowering

As early as February–March, often before the leaves emerge, numerous small yellow flowers appear in compact clusters. Although subtle, the flowering is striking due to its timing and offers an important early nectar source for bees and other pollinators.

Growth and habit

Cornus officinalis grows into a large shrub or small tree, often with multiple stems. Growth is slow and well balanced. The mature height usually reaches 4 to 6 metres, forming an elegant and natural crown over time.

Foliage and autumn colour

The leaves are fresh green and oval in shape. In autumn, they turn yellow, orange to red, adding strong seasonal interest.

Fruits

After flowering, elongated red fruits develop, resembling small olives. They are attractive to birds and add ornamental value. In Asia, these fruits have traditionally been used for medicinal purposes.

Position and soil

This dogwood prefers a sunny to partially shaded position and thrives in humus-rich, well-drained soils. It tolerates light drought but performs best when the soil does not dry out completely.

Garden use

Ideal as:

  • a solitary shrub or small tree

  • a multi-stemmed focal point in garden or park

  • part of a natural or woodland garden

  • an ecologically valuable early-flowering plant

Maintenance

Maintenance is minimal. Pruning is rarely required and limited to removing dead or crossing branches. Its natural growth habit remains attractive without intervention.
