Lavandula × intermedia 'Grosso' – Lavender

Lavandula × intermedia 'Grosso' is a vigorous, floriferous lavandin lavender with long, dark purple-blue flower spikes and an intense, aromatic fragrance. This popular lavender hybrid is a cross between Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia.

'Grosso' combines strong growth, attractive foliage and abundant flowering, making it ideal for sunny borders, Mediterranean gardens, herb gardens, rock gardens and large containers.

💜 Long, dark purple flower spikes

One of the main features of 'Grosso' is its impressive, long flower spikes. The dark purple-blue flowers rise above the grey-green foliage and create a striking summer display.

Flowering generally takes place from June to August, depending on growing conditions.

🐝 Excellent for pollinators

Lavender is an excellent plant for biodiversity. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees, bumblebees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Planting lavender in groups creates an attractive food source for pollinators throughout the summer.

🌿 Strongly aromatic and evergreen

The narrow, grey-green foliage is largely evergreen and releases the characteristic lavender fragrance when touched.

☀️ Sunny and dry conditions

This lavender thrives in full sun and warm conditions. Choose a sheltered, sunny position.

The soil should be very well drained and rather dry. Lavender does not tolerate wet feet, especially during winter.

A poor to moderately fertile, lime-rich soil is ideal. Avoid excessive fertilisation.

💧 Drought tolerant

Once established, 'Grosso' is highly drought tolerant and therefore an excellent choice for low-maintenance and climate-friendly gardens.

✂️ Pruning

Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact and healthy plant. Remove the faded flower stems and lightly shorten some of the young growth.

A light trim in spring can also be used to maintain the shape.

Never cut deeply into old, bare wood, as lavender has difficulty regrowing from it.

'Grosso' is reasonably to well hardy, provided it is planted in a well-drained soil. Winter wet is generally more problematic than cold temperatures.
