Product description

Buddleja davidii 'Royal Red' – Butterfly Bush

Buddleja davidii 'Royal Red', also known as Butterfly Bush 'Royal Red', is a striking deciduous shrub with long, elegant flower panicles in an intense deep wine-red to purplish-red colour. The flowers appear throughout summer and attract large numbers of butterflies, bees and other pollinating insects with their fragrance and abundant nectar.

Thanks to its long flowering period and rich nectar supply, this butterfly bush is an excellent choice for a butterfly-friendly, wildlife-friendly or colourful garden. The dark flowers also create a beautiful contrast with the plant's grey-green foliage.

A true butterfly magnet

As its common name suggests, Buddleja is particularly attractive to butterflies. The long flower panicles consist of hundreds of small flowers that provide abundant nectar. On warm, sunny days, the plant can become a real gathering place for butterflies.

'Royal Red' generally flowers from July to September. Removing faded flower heads can encourage the plant to produce additional blooms.

Intense dark-red flowers

'Royal Red' is one of the most striking butterfly bush cultivars, thanks to its deep red-purple to wine-red flower panicles. The long flower spikes rise elegantly above the grey-green foliage.

This makes it not only valuable to pollinating insects, but also an attractive ornamental shrub for sunny borders. It combines particularly well with ornamental grasses and perennials in softer colours.

Position and soil

Buddleja davidii 'Royal Red' prefers full sun. A sunny position encourages abundant flowering and strong, healthy growth. The plant is adaptable and grows in a range of soil types as long as excess water can drain away.

A fertile, well-drained soil is ideal. Once established, the plant is reasonably drought tolerant.

Pruning

Annual pruning is recommended to keep the butterfly bush compact and encourage plenty of flowering shoots. Cut the plant back hard in early spring, after the risk of severe frost has passed. Buddleja flowers on new wood.

During the flowering season, faded flower heads can also be removed to encourage further flowering and reduce unnecessary seed production.

Strong and fast growing

Buddleja davidii is a vigorous and fast-growing shrub. Young plants may benefit from some protection during severe winters, while established plants are generally very hardy.

Without pruning, the shrub can become quite large. Annual pruning keeps 'Royal Red' manageable and encourages a well-branched plant with abundant flowers.

Excellent nectar plant

Buddleja is an excellent nectar plant for adult butterflies and other pollinating insects. 'Royal Red' has been selected particularly for its attractive, dark-coloured flowers.

It is important to note that Buddleja davidii is native to China and other parts of East Asia and is therefore not native to Belgium or the Netherlands. For a biodiversity-friendly garden, combine it with native nectar and host plants to provide food and habitat for insects throughout their life cycle.
