Brussels chicory, Dutch medium-early 

The Dutch mid-early Brussels chicory is a robust variety grown specifically for forcing Belgian endive, with or without a soil cover. It is known for its reliable yield and suitability for both home gardeners and professional growers.

Sowing

Sow from May to July directly in open ground, in rows spaced 30 cm apart. When seedlings have 4 to 5 leaves, thin them to 10 cm apart.
This mid-early chicory thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soil and a sunny location.

Maintenance and diseases

This variety requires minimal maintenance. Water during dry periods to prevent premature bolting.
It is susceptible to slugs.

Harvesting and forcing

From October to November, the roots can be prepared for forcing:

• Carefully lift the roots, keeping them intact.

• Cut the leaves just above the crown, leaving a small part attached.

• Allow the roots to dry for a few days.

• Place them upright in a box filled with sand or fine soil.

• Store in a cool, dark place. Darkness is essential.

• Keep the soil moist, avoiding excess water.

After about 4 weeks, white, tender endive heads will form. Harvest when they reach 10 cm in length.

Tips

Companion plants include radishes, beans, turnips, carrots and peas.
