Brussels Chicory Mechelen Mid-Early

This old regional Belgian variety is widely used for growing witloof either outdoors or in a cellar. It produces beautiful elongated witloof heads and is a mid-early variety.

Growing Tips for Brussels Chicory

Sowing

• Sow from May to July directly in rows 30 cm apart.

• Once seedlings have 4–5 leaves, thin to 10 cm spacing.

• Prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil and a sunny location.

Care and Diseases

• Requires minimal maintenance; water during dry periods to prevent premature bolting.

• Sensitive to slugs; take protective measures.

Harvesting

• From October to November, prepare witloof heads for forcing:

  1. Carefully dig up chicory, keeping roots intact.

  2. Trim leaves above the neck, leaving a small portion attached.

  3. Let roots dry a few days, then place upright in a box filled with sand or fine soil.

  4. Store in a cool, dark location (cellar).

  5. Keep the soil moist by watering regularly without flooding.

• After about 4 weeks, witloof heads develop. Harvest shoots when they reach approximately 10 cm by cutting carefully above the neck.

Tips

• Pairs well with radishes, beans, turnips, carrots, and peas.
