The Autumn Yellow Onion ‘Shakespeare’ is an early autumn onion variety with a round shape and firm yellow-white flesh. This reliable variety produces healthy, uniform bulbs from late spring onwards and is perfectly suited for autumn planting. Thanks to its excellent winter hardiness and consistent growth, ‘Shakespeare’ is a favourite among gardeners who want an early harvest.

🌿 Growing advice

• Planting time: from September to mid-December.

• Spacing: 25 cm between rows, 10 cm between plants.

• Soil: firm the soil before planting; choose well-drained, loose ground.

• Depth: plant so that the tip of the onion set just remains visible above the soil.

• Heavy soil: grow on small ridges to improve drainage and avoid rotting.

🌞 Harvest & Storage

• Harvest: in May–June, when the foliage turns yellow and starts to fall over.

• Drying: pull the onions and leave them to dry for a few days on the soil or under cover if it rains.

• Cleaning: remove soil and dry outer leaves.

• Storage: keep in wooden crates or mesh bags in a well-ventilated, dry place to continue drying. Properly dried onions can be stored for several months.

💡 Growing tip

On heavy or wet soil, it’s best to plant the onions on ridges.
If the season is very wet, lift the onions a bit earlier at the end of the season to prevent rot.
