Product description

Amorpha canescens ‘Indigogo!’ – False Indigo

Amorpha canescens ‘Indigogo!’ is a remarkable North American false indigo. This striking semi-shrub combines steel-blue foliage with deep purple flowers and contrasting orange stamens. A unique plant that immediately stands out in the border.

‘Indigogo!’ is also an excellent choice for a climate-resilient garden. It is extremely hardy, highly drought tolerant and not demanding about soil conditions. Thanks to its compact growth and strong character, it is particularly suitable for naturalistic planting, prairie gardens and borders combined with perennials and ornamental grasses.

🌿 Unique steel-blue foliage

The finely divided foliage of Amorpha canescens ‘Indigogo!’ has a striking steel-blue to grey-green colour. From July onwards, the plant produces deep purple flower spikes that contrast beautifully with the cool-toned foliage. The orange stamens provide an additional eye-catching accent.

After flowering, the seed pods remain on the plant for a long time, giving ‘Indigogo!’ ornamental value well into autumn and winter.

🌸 Compact and versatile

When cut back strongly in spring, the plant develops into a compact, bushy semi-shrub of approximately 80 cm tall and 70 cm wide. This makes it particularly easy to combine with perennials and ornamental grasses.

Flowering takes place from July to early September, extending the season of colour in the garden. The flowers are also highly attractive to bees and butterflies.

☀️ An excellent drought-tolerant plant

Amorpha canescens naturally occurs in dry prairies, savannas and woodland edges in North America. It is therefore exceptionally well adapted to dry conditions and prolonged periods of drought.

The plant develops a deep root system and tolerates drought very well. Once established, it requires little additional watering. ‘Indigogo!’ grows in both sandy and light loamy soils and is not particularly sensitive to soil pH. Good drainage is important.

The plant grows best in full sun, but also tolerates light shade. It is also well suited to windy locations.

🐝 Valuable for bees and butterflies

The flowers of Amorpha canescens are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. ‘Indigogo!’ therefore combines strong ornamental value with an important contribution to garden biodiversity.

🌾 Perfect for naturalistic and prairie planting

Amorpha canescens ‘Indigogo!’ looks particularly beautiful in a naturalistic border, prairie garden or drought-tolerant planting. The steel-blue foliage and deep purple flowers create a striking contrast with ornamental grasses and flowering perennials.

Beautiful combinations include:

Perennials: Asclepias, Monarda, Heliopsis, Echinops, Eryngium, Aster, Tradescantia, Liatris and Solidago.

Ornamental grasses: Sporobolus heterolepis, Sesleria autumnalis, Eragrostis spectabilis, Stipa tenuissima, Schizachyrium scoparium, Sorghastrum nutans, Andropogon gerardii and Molinia caerulea.

✂️ Pruning

Cut the plant back strongly in early spring, to approximately 10–15 cm above ground level. This encourages vigorous new growth and helps maintain its compact, bushy shape.
