Alfalfa (cover crop)

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a perennial legume known for its ability to fix nitrogen and improve soil structure thanks to its deep root system. It promotes biodiversity, helps control erosion and weeds, and can be incorporated into crop rotations to enhance soil health and reduce the pressure of pests and diseases. Properly used, alfalfa is a valuable cover crop for sustainable and environmentally friendly farming.

Alfalfa can also be used as mulch or animal feed, thanks to its high protein and nutrient content.

Cultivation Tips

Sowing:

• March–May on bare soil warmed to at least 8°C, or mid-August to mid-September

• Prefers well-drained soil (can grow in all soil types)

• Lightly roll or firm the soil and keep it moist for optimal germination

• Seeding rate: 200 g per 100 m²

Maintenance and Cutting:

• Avoid cutting in the first year to allow proper root development

• To use as a cover crop, cut or incorporate before the plant flowers

• For preservation, alfalfa can be cut multiple times per year

• Regular watering is crucial, especially in dry summer conditions
