Head lettuce (winter) ‘Rougette de Montpellier’

Winter lettuce Rougette de Montpellier (also called Rougette du Midi) is an old, crunchy variety with a small green head and a red tint. Perfect for fresh salads in early spring.

Sowing

• Period: August-September, under cover or directly in the field

• In nursery trays: sow and transplant after 4 weeks at 30 cm spacing, when plants have 4–5 leaves, before the first frost

• Direct sowing in the field: thin to 10 cm, later to 30 cm

Tip: Winter lettuce grows best in sunny locations, in humus-rich, well-composted soil, with regular watering during dry periods.

Care and disease prevention

• Keep soil moist with mulch

• Water regularly during dry periods

• Protect plants from slugs

Harvesting

• Harvest winter lettuce from March to May, when heads are well-formed

• Cut the root level with the ground

• Can be stored for a few days in the fridge

• Frost-tolerant up to -10°C, can survive a mild winter without extra protection

• Successive sowings ensure continuous harvest

• Protection from slugs is recommended
