Head lettuce (spring) ‘Mei-Koningin from Liège’

Spring lettuce Mei-Koninging from Liège is an old regional variety developed by Liège gardeners aiming for a larger head than the original “Reine de Mai”. Perfect for cold-frame or outdoor cultivation, it produces firm, tender leaves with pale green foliage and a slight red tint.

Sowing

• Period: February to mid-April, under cover

• In nursery trays: transplant after about 4 weeks at 30 cm spacing, when plants have 4–5 leaves

• Direct sowing: thin to 10 cm, later to 30 cm

Tip: Spring lettuce grows best in sunny locations, in humus-rich, well-composted soil, with regular watering during dry periods.

Care and disease prevention

• Keep soil moist using mulch

• Water regularly during dry spells

• Protect plants from slugs

Harvesting

• Harvest spring lettuce 8 to 10 weeks after sowing, when the head is fully formed

• Cut the root level with the ground

• Can be stored for a few days in the fridge
