Product description

Allium ursinum – Wild Garlic for a Natural and Edible Garden

Allium ursinum, commonly known as wild garlic, is a native spring-flowering perennial valued for both its ornamental beauty and culinary use. This woodland plant thrives in partial to full shade and forms a fresh green carpet of aromatic leaves in early spring, followed by elegant star-shaped white flowers.

Wild garlic is ideal for woodland gardens, food forests or natural shady borders and provides an important nectar source for early pollinators.

Characteristics

  • Common name: Wild garlic

  • Botanical name: Allium ursinum

  • Family: Amaryllidaceae

  • Height: 20–30 cm

  • Flowering period: April – May

  • Flower colour: White

  • Position: Partial shade to shade

  • Soil: Humus-rich, moist but well-drained

  • Native: Yes (Western Europe)

Wild garlic naturally grows in deciduous woodlands and along stream banks. Once established, it spreads gently through seeds and bulbs, creating a dense groundcover over time.

Ornamental value

The bright green, lance-shaped leaves appear early in spring, bringing life to the garden when most perennials are still dormant. In April and May, airy clusters of white star-shaped flowers rise above the foliage.

After flowering, the plant gradually dies back, making it perfect to combine with later-emerging plants such as ferns or hostas.

Edible and medicinal uses

Wild garlic has a mild garlic flavour. Leaves, flowers and bulbs are edible.

Uses:

  • Fresh pesto

  • Herb butter

  • Soups and quiches

  • Salads

Harvest the leaves before flowering for the strongest flavour.

Planting and maintenance

  • Plant bulbs in autumn (September – November)

  • Planting depth: 5–8 cm

  • Spacing: 10–15 cm

  • Low maintenance

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally

A reliable, low-maintenance perennial that returns every spring.
